Dumbest Generation

I totally disagree with Bauerlein. Technology has not made this generation dumb, it has simply made things easier for us. We learn the same amount as previous students, only in a different way. One of the reasons Bauerlein says we are the dumbest generation is because "They don't read books -- and don't want to, either." To me, this does not even make sense. Basically, everything we need to know is on the internet somewhere. Therefore, we don't have to spend time looking through books for one small fact. Also, we do read books. For english this year, we have to read 8 novels, not to metion the textbooks we have to read. Of course most students do not want to read, it adds more work on top of what we already have to do. But what I think Bauerlein failed to recognize is that we read plenty of text on the internet. Another reason Bauerlein says we are the dumbest generation is because "They can't spell." We can spell, but when were talking to friends it is all about speed. AIM has its own language. Outside of AIM, such as class, we can spell perfectly fine. Also, Bauerlein's last reason for being the dumbest generation - age - does not prove his point at all. It is saything that everyone "dumb" at that age, including him. I cannot disagree with this point, because as you grow older you gain more knowlege, but it certainly does not help Bauerleins argument.

I agree with all of the points that you said. The opinions you gave are very strong and it proves that point that we are not dumb. I think it was good that you had points that the author said, but then went back around and said how you disagree with them.

we talked about this in class so you know that i agree with you. i did not feel like breaking down the points in my post, but if i did, i would have said all of those things. it is just ridiculous that he said "we don't read". like are you serious? and you made a valid point that we have so much to do already that it isn't that we don't like reading, and we wouldn't do it if we weren't busy, its that we already have so much goingin our lives, that reading is just something on top of that. also neither of us said it but we'd both probably agree on that point about our generation not coiving their opinions online. thats crazy! we have the most outspoken generation ever. his points were just so juvenile, and i think both of us said that in our posts.
